Job Summary

The Pumper (also known as Lease Operator) is responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of oil and gas production wells and associated surface equipment. This role ensures wells are producing safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily oil, gas, and water production from assigned wells

  • Inspect wellheads, tanks, separators, pumps, and production equipment

  • Start up, shut down, and adjust wells and surface equipment as needed

  • Measure and record production volumes, pressures, and fluid levels

  • Identify abnormal operating conditions and troubleshoot problems

  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on pumps, valves, and lines

  • Coordinate with supervisors, maintenance crews, and contractors

  • Manage tank levels and schedule oil, water, and chemical hauling

  • Detect and report leaks, spills, or environmental hazards

  • Maintain accurate field notes, production reports, and safety documentation

  • Ensure compliance with company safety standards and regulatory requirements

  • Respond to call-outs and emergencies as required

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (preferred)

  • 1–5+ years of oilfield production or pumper experience (varies by employer)

  • Strong understanding of oil and gas production operations

  • Ability to read gauges, meters, and production reports

  • Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills

  • Knowledge of safety procedures and environmental regulations

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with rod pump, ESP, gas lift, or plunger lift systems

  • Familiarity with electronic field reporting

  • Basic computer and mobile reporting skills

  • H2S certification (or ability to obtain)

  • First Aid / CPR certification

Work Environment

  • Outdoor field environment

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, and hazardous materials

  • On-call rotation and irregular hours may be required

  • Frequent driving between well sites
